Sexist vintage ads: some of these have been circulating the net for the longest time, still, there’s a few I hadn’t seen before.

Content farming: conquering the web by producing cheap content based on search stats

“Most media companies are trying hard to increase those numbers, to boost the value of their online content until it matches the amount of money it costs to produce. But […] instead of trying to raise the market value of online content to match the cost of producing it — perhaps an impossible proposition — the secret is to cut costs until they match the market value.”

You might have noticed how Sturgeon’s Law (“Ninety percent of everything is crud”) lives its own rampant life on the Internet in the form of these ad filled sites with unbelievably shitty how-tos and fake advice. But wait a year or two until clustered ponds of shit like eHow, Cracked and Livestrong might begin to mimic journalism. Quality media has only started its long, stinky journey down the rabit hole/drain pipe of the Intertube

Microsoft’s strange new online video ads for Internet Explorer 8

I kind of liked F.O.M.S. and to some degree, G.R.I.P.E.S.. It can’t be easy to come up with something clever to say about a product known to everyone who cares as utter shit. But hey, IE9 is likely to be good enough for basic users in a Safari-like way.

“Come to Finland”: a hard cover book and poster collection of vintage ads for Finnish tourism

A charming book (available in English, Finnish, French, German and Swedish) for culturally oriented hipsters and those longing for simpler times… when Finland was a shitty, underdeveloped agrarian economy.

Some of the ads can be ordered as full-size posters, the format they were designed for. And because I was bored tonight, I stole some print quality tif files from the press kit (requires free registration on the original site) and made them available for download with thumbnails.

EDIT 2008-12-03 16:11 EET: I was asked to remove the files linked to above for legal reasons. The registration required for accessing the pictures is also not freely available to the public or automatically granted; an editor of the site recognized my name and therefore accepted my request swiftly.
