What the Assange case reveals about rape in America

“”He’s accused of pinning one woman’s arms and using his body weight to hold her down during one alleged assault, and of raping a woman while she was sleeping.”"

Okay, so it’s Valleywag, but here’s a supposed Wikileaks/Assange/Rape police report leak

“The Daily Mail has managed to secure a copy of the police report detailing Julian Assange’s alleged molestation of two Swedish women. Inside, we learn that Assange’s preferred method of seducing groupies is to feed them cheese.”

I’ve refrained from posting anything on Assange’s sex life, waiting for the dust to settle and the fun to begin. Not that rape or confused charges thereof are fun.

But you see, while we still might want to wait for sources more modest on the tackiness scale than Valleywag, it’d be ironically unsurprising for rumours regarding characters like Assange’s to point towards symptoms of an inflated ego and attitude problems about safe sex.

IFPI’s child porn strategy (Christian Engström, Pirate MEP)

”Child pornography is great,” the speaker [at a seminar organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Stockholm on May 27, 2007, under the title ”Sweden — A Safe Haven for Pirates?] declared enthusiastically. ”It is great because politicians understand child pornography. By playing that card, we can get them to act, and start blocking sites.”"

Sweden’s bizarre tradition of watching Donald Duck cartoons on Christmas Eve

“[In 1992 when] Arne Weise, who hosted the show live from 1972 to 2002 attempted to get the network to record his portion of the program in advance so that he could spend Christmas with his family, newspapers got a hold of the story and helped scuttle the change. “We had recorded everything, but no way [...] the host was supposed to sit there in some sort of vigil over Christmas.”

“Weise claims that Sweden’s stubborn insistence that he record live every year destroyed his personal life, blaming the show for his three divorces. “I wasn’t easy to live with—I was in a bad mood out of nervousness before going on air, and tired afterwards.”

Swedish Pirate Party launches instance of the Etherpad open source code

The code was released by Google a few hours ago, Piratpartiet‘s announcement is published over here (Google translation).

The original Etherpad service had in a short time become a killer application for collaborative work within at least the Swedish, and according to my personal experience, in the Finnish Pirate Party as well. Google’s initial plan was probably to use Etherpad’s tech with Wave and to shut down the original service entirely.

The Etherpad open source project is available here.

Swedish law draft: police and domestic intelligence to gain rights for automatic ‘net wiretapping

Did any silly sod believe even for a minute that the wiretapping rights actually wouldn’t be expanded from the Swedish military intelligence to domestic agencies? Because, you know, it is the Russian internet traffic that was so crucially important to capture?

Also, an article in Svenska Dagbladet (in Swedish).

Nasty Old People (imdb) was mentioned a few times lately for being the first Creative Commons licensed/freely redistributable feature film from Sweden. Having just watched it I don’t feel like I wasted my time. The story and characters are quirky at times, but there are a some simple, beautiful moments of humans getting along.

Postcard depecting Kent Albins, Swedish Dansband from Hell

The horrors of Swedish “Dansband” culture

It turns out that the above link is a digest of a bigger collection of atrocities.

For those who read Swedish, there’s always Katastrofala Omslag, a great selection of equally horrific pieces with stinging written commentary. Svenska Dansband is great resource as well.

I applaud these brave attempts to raise international awareness of the sinister threat of Dansband.

The Pirate Bay claims to end all contact with Old Media

Due to pigfuckery performed by people representing Old Media, TPB claims to no longer respond to any press inquiries.

Anything even remotely connected to technology has never been represented correctly or fairly by journalists (whom we all know are clueless by definition), but the last straw for TPB’s staff was apparently claims made by a media outlet yesterday according to which TPB had “published pictures of dead children” (Google translation).

The pictures in question are part of autopsy reports related to a high profile murder case made public by the prosecutor and are, obviously for anyone familiar with Bittorrent, uploaded by some user of TPB. As TPB isn’t in the business of censoring the Internet, they have refused to remove anything except child porn from the service, which in this case lead to death threats being aimed towards the staff.
